Solar Plate Exhibit May 3 - 25
Expressions Graphics members have been gathering to learn intaglio and relief printing methods using the solar plate medium. The exhibit is a culmination of all their efforts; each member bring their edition for the portfolios!
Join us at the reception and you’ll be able to hear first-hand how this medium is used.
What are Solar Plates
Printmaking with a solar (polymer) plate is a simple approach and safer alternative to traditional etching and relief printing. The plate is a prepared, light-sensitive polymer surface on a steel backing for artists to produce fine prints.
Here are the basic steps:
- Draw or print your image on a transparency
- Expose the solar plate with the transparency on top in the sun or under a UV light
- Wash the plate and let it dry
Of course, there are details to learn about all of the steps!
Both positives and negatives can be utilized; intaglio and relief printing techniques can be applied. The medium is also used for a contemporary non-toxic means of photogravure. This same medium is used by many professional print shops to produce cards, flyers, posters, etc.
There are a number of manufacturers of polymer plates. Here’s Dan Weldon, the creator of the SOLARPLATE version of polymer plates, with a demonstration of exposing and printing an intaglio plate.
